The Casa de la Misericordia, in Cabra del Santo Cristo, was originally the Hospital de la Misericordia, one of the institutions founded by Mother Marta de Jesús. It was a hospital for travellers that provided care until the confiscations of the 19th century.
Of the original complex, the old hospital chapel remains, which retained its small church structure until the early 1970s. Around 1973, the interior was converted to create two storeys and new windows were opened on the exterior, altering its original layout. Later, around 1990, the building was converted into a public library, at which point the Town Council carried out the restoration of its façade.
The façade is the building’s most striking feature and is in a simple Baroque style. It is organised around a linteled opening framed by large hanging pilasters, joined by mouldings in the style of an alfiz. In the central axis there was a tondo with a relief image of the Immaculate Conception, which disappeared in 1936. The ensemble is crowned by the coat of arms of the Bishop of Jaén and Grand Inquisitor Agustín Rubín de Ceballos (1780–1793), considered the most significant artistic feature of the façade.
