Jimena

On the northern slopes of the Sierra Mágina, Jimena blends the green of its olive groves with the silhouette of Mount Aznaitín. Its landscape alternates between vegetable gardens, fig trees and olive groves with mountainous areas, creating a peaceful setting, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the fresh air. The town is also known for its early-ripening figs, which form part of the municipality’s agricultural identity.

Its cultural heritage blends history and landscape. The Medieval Castle dominates the town centre and serves as a reminder of its borderland past, whilst the Church of Santiago el Mayor bears the mark of centuries of devotion. Very close to the town centre, the Cueva de la Graja preserves one of the most important collections of rock art in Andalusia, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, which connects visitors with the earliest communities that inhabited these mountains.

Less than 2 kilometres from Jimena lies a site linked to the town’s livestock heritage: the Pilar y la Albarrada de la Fuente del Moro, associated with the ‘Cordel del Gollizno’ livestock trail as a resting place and watering hole for livestock, with a capacity of 7,000 litres.

A very distinctive tradition in Jimena is the Festival of the ‘Tíos de Ricia’. This custom dates back to the time of Charles III and originated following a tax increase that provoked the people’s anger. Ever since then, every year, the streets fill with the Tíos de Ricia, unique rag dolls that reflect the people’s sentiments through scathing satirical placards. A parade of wit that ends amidst blows and flames, purifying the past to celebrate the present.

For lovers of the great outdoors, Jimena offers trails to suit every pace. The Sendero del Pinar de Cánava trail starts at the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and leads to a centuries-old forest declared a Natural Monument, perfect for walking amidst the shade and scent of pine. Those seeking a greater challenge can climb to the Cruz de la Atalaya, passing through Los Caracoles, and enjoy spectacular panoramic views. Shorter and more accessible, the Cueva de la Graja Trail combines rock art and beautiful mountain landscapes without steep gradients.

Jimena, the starting point for experiencing Sierra Mágina with all your senses; walking through pine forests, running along historic trails or letting your gaze soar over a sea of endless mountains. A destination that invites you to get moving, take a deep breath and let nature take you away
