Torres

Torres, situated on the slopes of Cerro de la Vieja, combines the freshness of its springs with the surrounding mountain landscape. At an altitude of over 800 metres, it is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the province, such as Pico Almadén (2,032 m), Monte Aznaitín (1,720 m) and Monteagudo (1,683 m).

One of its great natural treasures is Fuenmayor, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful spots in the Sierra Mágina. About 7 km from the town centre, this spot is a true oasis of water and shade: its spring and the surrounding streams and vegetation make it the perfect place to stroll, relax and connect with the mountains. Furthermore, in spring the valley is transformed by the cherry blossom, a spectacle of whites and pinks celebrated each year at the Cherry Blossom Festival and particularly evident in places such as Fuenmayor, Navaparís or Fuente Nítar.

Strolling amongst whitewashed houses and historic spots, we come across the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán, with its distinctive façade of stone arches and a fine Gothic-Mudejar baptismal font; the Clock Tower, built on the site of an ancient medieval castle tower and visible from almost anywhere in the village; and the Renaissance façade of the Palace of the Marquises of Camarasa. On the outskirts, ‘La Puente’, built by Andrés de Vandelvira following a flood that destroyed the previous bridge, is a symbol of Renaissance ingenuity and the historical importance of transport links, connecting to the riverbank where the mills once stood.

Torres is also a destination for experiencing the mountains in motion. From the Columpio Turístico Gigante, the experience of “touching the sky” becomes a reality with sweeping views of the valley and the natural park. From this viewpoint starts the “Muro Alto” Trail, a family-friendly route that passes key points in the municipality and allows visitors to enjoy the cherry blossom alongside a historic dyke built after the San Gil storm of 1843. Added to this are the Cimbras and Suspended Walkways, a panoramic route along rocky escarpments integrated into the town centre, offering a unique perspective of the landscape and the town itself.

Torres has established itself as a climbing destination thanks to its well-equipped and easily accessible sites, which are ideal for both beginners and experienced climbers. Notable areas include La Piscina, La Caseta and Los Columpios, as well as Peña de Jaén and the bouldering areas on the slopes of Almadén and Cerro de la Vieja.

It is also the starting point for some of the park’s best-known routes. Torres – Hondacabras – Fuenmayor – Puerto de Torres – Castillejos – Mata Bejid – Centro de Visitantes del Parque Natural route crosses the heart of the Mágina massif, combining pine forests, old cattle resting places and climbs reaching the Puerto de la Mata, at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. From there, the views stretch as far as the Sierra Nevada and the peaks of Almadén or Cerro Cárceles.

Among its most popular trails is the Sendero de Fuenmayor, a 6.4 km route of moderate difficulty starting from the recreational area of the same name. The path winds through streams and Mediterranean woodlands of holm oaks, pines, almond and cherry trees, until it reaches the Zurreón waterfall, particularly striking in winter when the water freezes. This area is also home to the Cueva del Morrón, a rock sanctuary with paintings declared a Site of Cultural Interest, which connects visitors with the earliest origins of human presence in the region.

In summer, Fuenmayor is the perfect retreat for enjoying the fresh air and the sound of water; in winter and spring, its trails invite you to walk amongst unique scents and colours. In Torres, every season offers a different way to experience the mountains.
