It is one of the largest reservoirs in Spain and constitutes a first-rate landscape resource in the Natural Park, so its entire environment is specially protected as a Bujaraiza Reserve Area. The left bank is crossed by the A-319 road, and has various viewpoints, recreational areas, marked trails, accommodation and restaurant services, as well as facilities for practicing water sports. The right bank is mostly traveled through forest tracks and roads. At its beginning (southern part) it has several viewpoints on the Félix Rodriguez de la Fuente Route.
The reservoir is fed mainly by the waters of the Guadalquivir, has almost 500 cubic hectometres of capacity and 1500 hectares of surface. A good part of it was once occupied by the beautiful plain of Hornos and the Guadalquivir valley.
We suggest ...
The Tranco road is usually quite busy on dates of greater tourist influx, so, if you really want to enjoy the landscape, do not settle for looking at it from the car and stopping for a while at the dam or at a viewpoint, as is usually the case. habitual. Our advice is: walk. On the right bank, you have several forest tracks, as well as the circular signposted path PR-A 149, which begins very close to the village of Fuente la Higuera. On the left, there are two signposted trails: the PR-A 193, which begins 1.1 km north from the Tranco dam, and a section of the GR-144, which is taken halfway between Hornos de Segura and Cañada Morales, in a steep curve. In addition, in the surroundings of the reservoir you will not find many slopes.
