Senderismo el Pocico

Plaza de España, Jódar
How to get

This hiking trail has a linear part and a final circular section. It has a total distance of 7 km.

It begins in the Plaza de España de Jódar, where we can enjoy the facade of the facade of the Church of the Assumption (16th century). We continue along c / General Noriega to the Castillo de Jódar. We go up C / Plaza del Castillo towards the Nature Classroom Félix R. de la Fuente. From there, through the peri-urban park we access the Trascastillo Viewpoint.

Behind us is the starting point of our trail "Los Pocicos", outside the town. We can collect information on the information panel. We will follow an old well-defined bridle path leaving the town behind. We will progressively climb up to a small hill where the Hermitage of San Cristobal was located, which gives its name to this hill. We see an old olive grove still in operation called “Primer Pocico”. It has an old mine and a small water spring. We will look back to take a nice panoramic view.

We will follow a small section of track of about 100 m. and we will take the path that appears on the left again. After going through some almond trees, we will pass through a short section of olive grove until we connect again with the lane at the end of the climb.

From here the terrain changes. We can see the "Segundo Pocico" in front, between olive groves and some isolated Aleppo pines. Our objective is the rock formations that we have in the west direction. When we reach the curve of the lane, we will take the second path that ascends between olive trees. We will continue straight on the path that takes us to the "Segundo Pocico" pass. From here we will have wonderful views of the Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park and the Guadalquivir valley.

At this point we go around the limestone formations to go down the so-called Haza de Turrilla. It is an old dry land farm. The shelter of the rock has an old cattle trough, and on this we must admire a curious rocky pinnacle: Peña Pescuezo. We will go down between the almond trees to continue our path. After 100 meters of descent we will take a lane with a certain slope that we will climb to turn left and continue our route.

During the return we will have another perspective of the town of Jódar while we walk through shrub and herbaceous vegetation. The mountain is dominated by esparto grass: raw material of great importance for Jódar in the past.
