It is the great church of Alcalá par excellence, to which its location -at the beginning of Calle Real and Carrera de las Mercedes-, its dimensions and the fact that it is the image of the Virgin of Las Mercedes, patron saint of the town.

Its construction began in the year 1538, having a very slow growth rate as a result of the scarcity of economic resources. It was built almost in its entirety at the end of that same sixteenth century, working on it the famous Jaen architect Ginés Martínez de Aranda.

During the seventeenth century the works were resumed and in the first third of the eighteenth century the sacristy, the cloister and the main chapel were completed; and at the end of the 18th century the tower was built, which contrasts stylistically with the rest of the church.
