Cerrada de Utrero, Linarejos

The Cerrada de Utrero-Lanchar de Linarejos sector is located in materials from the Prebético de la Cordillera Bética. Specifically, in the Cerrada de Utrero, the Guadalquivir river is embedded in limestone of the Upper Jurassic frequently dolomitized that develop constructive and destructive karst forms at different scales.

The narrow fluvial-karst valley was carved during the Quaternary along the axis of a syncline in the N40E direction. The karst canyon of the Cerrado is one km long and has a stepped profile due to the development of travertines and pools. The walls of the valley are dotted by minor karst forms of great beauty and spectacular lapiaces. The encasing of the Guadalquivir river has left the Linarejos stream hanging producing an impressive waterfall, known as the Linarejos Cascade. This waterfall of several tens of meters develops a travertine mass with a “horsetail” morphology and waterfall facies. The Lanchar de Linarejos is located on the SE flank of the syncline and presents a sequence of lapiaces and structural alleys controlled by conjugate joints.
