The castle fulfilled an important mission in one of the key strategic points of control over the Guadalquivir and Guadalimar. Its origin probably dates back to the Caliphate period, although it was destroyed by Fernando III at the end of the first third of the 13th century. Already under Christian power, the castle was rebuilt between the end of this century and the beginning of the next. Its most genuine element is its magnificent square-shaped keep, inside which there are two superimposed rooms covered by barrel vaults.

It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1985.
