Monumento Natural El olivo de Fuentebuena

, Arroyo del Ojanco
How to get

If Jaén is characterized by something, it is for its olive trees. There are very old ones and there are also large ones (which has nothing to do with their age) distributed by different municipalities of the provincial geography. The uniqueness of the Arroyo del Ojanco olive tree lies, more than in its age, in its gigantic dimensions, which is why it has been proposed to be declared a Natural Monument of Andalusia. It is said that it is the largest olive tree in the world, and possibly it is, since the figures that show its measurements, referred to in the file at the beginning of the article, speak of a unique specimen. To this should be added its production capacity, which is around 600 kg. of olives per season (an irrigated adult olive tree does not usually reach 70 kg.).
The two large branches (2.10 and 2.80 m. Perimeter) that branch off from its thick stem support the entire weight of the crown, which becomes of such magnitude -especially when the fruit develops- that it forces to its dense foliage to rest on the ground at many ends of the crown. In short, everything in this marvelous specimen is Guinness record.
Such a long centuries-old history has generated some legendary stories about this olive tree, such as that it was planted in Roman times (who built a magnificent town a few hundred meters from Fuentebuena) or by some friars after the Christian reconquest of these land. Another version affirms that its size, so different from that of the olive trees that surround it, is due to the fact that it was born from a twig blessed on Palm Sunday.
