Serie Jurásico - Cretácico de El Yelmo

From the Segura de la Sierra viewpoint there is a magnificent panoramic view of the El Yelmo relief (its northern slope), one of the most emblematic of the Sierra de Segura. This relief has a synclinal structure, with a rich succession of marine and continental sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic-Cretaceous age.

In addition to the vertical succession, there are important lateral changes in the stratigraphic architecture, observable in the panorama, which consist of notable changes in powers, culminating in the wedging of formations. These exceptional characteristics are due to the paleogeographic position on the margin of a marine basin (South Iberian paleomargin) during the Mesozoic. The observations on the northern slope of the Yelmo are complemented, from the same viewpoint, with that of the “Corte de Segura de la Sierra”, in which a section that covers the Jurassic and Cretaceous is observed, and that is accessible by the track Asphalt forest that leads into the Sierra de Segura from the town of Segura de la Sierra.
