Garganta de Hornos

, Hornos de Segura

The full length of this broad, deep valley is traversed by the serpentine A-317a, which at first ascends through olive groves before moving into enclosed areas of pine forest; Aleppo pines in the lower stretches, giving way to European black pines in the intermediate zones and finally Corsican pines in the highest reaches. Mixed in among these pines are abundant examples of oaks and other species typically found in Mediterranean woodland, giving the landscape a markedly lush appearance.

Half a kilometre from Hornos, on the right-hand side, you will come across the viewing point of Las Celadillas. Make sure you visit the charming village of La Capellanía further on, the crossroads for which is well-signposted on the left-hand side. From there you can embark on the signposted PR-A 150 trail, which winds its way around the outcrops on the flanks of Yelmo Chico and offers a number of panoramic views. The A-317a itself is a fine road for walking on, as it has had very little traffic since the construction of the new A-317 from Hornos to Santiago de la Espada.
