It was the main square of the city during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the heart of the city since the late Middle Ages. It is thought that there was a mosque in it in Muslim times that was reconverted to Christian worship after the taking of the city by Fernando III. In this case, the Sahn or Ablution courtyard would generate the current Plaza de Santa María and its minaret the Clock Tower. Already in the 15th century it was considered as the first public space in the city and evidence of this is the fact that the Cabildo decided to build its house in it.
