On September 28, 1591, Fray Juan de la Cruz arrived at the Úbeda convent to "cure some fever." Here he remains until his death in a poor cell of this convent. It is the definitive meeting with the Beloved, at midnight between December 13 and 14 Fray Juan goes "to sing matins to heaven." That verse he wrote: "break the fabric of this sweet encounter" has come true.

From that moment on the convent of Úbeda became a focus that radiated the spirituality of the barefoot Carmelite mystic. The religious of this community always opened their doors to all those who came to know the unique figure of Fray Juan. Finally, in 1978 the San Juan de la Cruz Museum was inaugurated, collecting various relics and other memories that were related to the Saint, as well as preparing the visitor a tour of his life and his doctrine. It was also enriched with a remarkable library specialized in San Juan and spirituality issues.

In the Jubilee Year 2000 the Museum underwent an important reform, increasing with a large number of works from the convents of the Province of the Holy Custodian Angel of Andalusia. In this way, the Museum currently has twelve rooms where the visitor can get to know this great universal figure of Christian thought and spirituality.
