Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol

Plaza de la Constitución, 10. 23150, Valdepeñas de Jaén How to get

This church can be located within the Renaissance art, with a simplistic façade that stands out for its tower, of proportionate measurements, and the exterior walls that surround the church where a little elaborate stonework stands out. These masonry walls are reinforced by quadrangular buttresses and covered with gabled by brick tiles. Inside, the clarity and spaciousness stand out notably. Returning to its façade, it is located on one of the sides of the church giving the entrance to the Plaza de la Constitución with a simple semicircular arch on which we find a second body with scallop, which is intended to host the image of Santiago Apóstol. The tower, following the line, has a square base and articulated in two bodies, the second being the one that has holes formed by semi-circular arches, where the church bell tower resides.

Information

When we enter the interior of this church, we are struck by the breadth granted by the large diaphanous naves, which are supported by a square section buttress, all arranged in an orderly manner and giving a harmonious character to the entire interior construction.

Another of the most outstanding aspects is the body of the church composed of three naves of three sections each and with identical height, which house spherical vaults in dedication to Santiago Apóstol. As we enter through the main entrance, to our left we find a choir high on groin vaults, below which is the baptismal font.

Another of the highlights of this church are the altarpieces, which were created after the Civil War. The altarpiece located on the main altar is made by Francisco Cerezo, a painter from Jaen born in Villargordo. But we can also find an image of Saint Joseph, whose author is unknown, and an image of the Virgen de los Dolores, which, as previously mentioned, is taken in procession on Good Friday.
