It was built between 1946 and 1954, and inaugurated in April 1953 by Francisco Franco, as an infrastructure for the irrigation of the surrounding lands, within the general colonization plans of the Franco regime.

The useful capacity of the reservoir is 163 hm3, although its total capacity is 175 hm3 this is reduced due to the siltation of sediments at the bottom.

Its main tributary is the Guadalén River, which rises to the south of Campo de Montiel and crosses the Sierra Morena, also highlighting the contribution of the Dañado and Montizón rivers to the main tributary.

Other minor tributaries that discharge their waters onto the reservoir, or onto the Guadalén River before being dammed, are the Galapagar, Olilla, Las Navas, Las Herrerías and Madriscal streams, among others.
