On the road to Valdepeñas de Jaén and next to the Los Caballeros Restaurant, a dirt track starts that basically conforms to the layout of an old cattle road, the Cañada Real de la Revoltilla. The first section of the route runs along this cattle trail. As soon as you start walking, you have to leave the road to an urbanization on the right. As you gain height, the panoramic views over Los Villares open up.
Program
Some tractor tracks emerge from the right and left and enter the farms, but the lane offers no doubt. The olive trees cover practically the entire slope and will accompany us throughout the climb. After 20 minutes of walking, right on a very tight curve, a junction appears. In this case, choose the path on the right that climbs steeply. 10 minutes later a less obvious lane will be left on the left.
The path then approaches the rocky cliffs and, shortly before reaching the top, forks. The branch on the left reaches the edge of the limestone wall and in a few minutes, the Contadero Cave, today transformed into a small mountain sanctuary.
From this point, the route follows the path that runs along the very edge of the slope. After crossing a wire gate, you enter the rough calcareous plain. First, the bare and sharp rock makes walking difficult, and later the bushes. Despite these inconveniences, in 35 minutes you can reach the edge of the impressive La Veleta cliffs. The makeshift gazebo is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. At this point, take extreme precautions if the route is made with children or dogs. There is a risk of falling into the void.
