Huelma

Huelma is one of the main gateways to the Sierra Mágina Natural Park. Surrounded by mountains and olive groves, it lies on the slopes of the mountain range, with the River Jandulilla flowing through the municipality.

Its historic centre, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, is home to some of the main landmarks of Sierra Mágina. The 15th-century Castillo de los Duques de Alburquerque dominates the town and serves as a reminder of its defensive past, whilst the historic washing place of El Chopo houses the Museo del Agua, a space that highlights the tradition of water use and the fundamental role of women in community life.

The town’s most notable monument is theIglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción, one of the jewels of the Jaén Renaissance, built with the involvement of master architects such as Andrés de Vandelvira. It stands out for its grandeur, architectural balance and historical and artistic value.

The region’s oldest heritage is now showcased at the Centro de Interpretación del Yacimiento Íbero de El Pajarillo, located in the historic centre. Although the sanctuary itself is not open to visitors, its artefacts are preserved at the Iberian Museum in Jaén.

In the area around Jimena, the Solera Castle stands out, a 13th-century military watchtower situated at an altitude of over 1,100 metres, almost impregnable due to its natural defences, of which walled remains and a cistern are preserved.

The spiritual dimension of the municipality is reflected in the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta, 7 kilometres from the town centre, which was built over an ancient well and is linked to 16th-century Marian apparitions and a deep popular devotion.

Those seeking nature on the move will find routes for all levels in Huelma. From gentle walks along trails such as the Cordel del Salado or the paths of Gibralberca and El Peralejo, to more demanding routes along the slopes of Mágina or through the karst landscapes and high-altitude pastures of Mata Bejid. And for those who want to go one step further, the Subida al Pico Mágina (2,167 m), the highest point in the province of Jaén, offers a high-mountain experience with sweeping views over much of eastern Andalusia.

The economic and social life of Huelma is showcased at ExpoHuelma, the Sierra Mágina Natural Park Trade Fair, a showcase for local produce. Held at the end of August, coinciding with the local festivities, it brings together local products, cuisine, crafts, agricultural machinery and tourism projects, as well as workshops, tastings and a prominent exhibition of native livestock.

In Huelma, every path brings together nature, history and tradition; you can walk amongst castles and olive groves, explore mountain trails, ‘soar’ whilst enjoying the views from the peaks and return to the village to continue discovering a municipality that keeps its memory and identity alive.
