Program

Through San Marcos –on April 25–, since ancient times, the saint has been processed through the town following the itinerary of the fountains to ask for water for the fields. It was customary to sing litanies imploring the saint for rain. The image of San Marcos carries a bull at his feet, which due to its small size is popularly known as “the dog of San Marcos”, which is thrown into the waters of a well located in the place known as El Nacimiento when the procession passes by. It was also customary for the village dogs, at the hands of the young men, to follow the same fate as the little evangelist's dog, and end up diving into the waters of the springs of Bélmez de la Moraleda. Being close to the date of San Marcos in the month of May, for this festival it was customary, now in oblivion, for the young men to hang around and sing to the girls that the so-called “mayos” pretended. Following this custom, which used to last until the Day of the Cross –May 3–, rounds were made, serenades were given and “bunches” of flowers were placed at the doors of the girls who wanted to hang around.
