Ermita de Santa Lucía

0, Campillo de Arenas

The history of the Ermita de Santa Lucía dates back to 1858, when after several years of collecting alms from devotees who passed through Puerta de Arenas and stopped to pray before the Saint, represented, at first, in a painting placed in a of the rock walls and later by the first image placed in a small niche, next to the tunnel, opened in 1840. Once enough donations had been collected, the first hermitage was erected. The blessing was attended by local authorities and more than 2000 devotees from all over the region. That first hermitage of popular architecture, very popular at the time, deteriorated over time, requiring its restoration on several occasions. The first reform was made in 1956 because the hermitage was in a dilapidated state. In 1973, it had to be restored again, leaving its architecture, both exterior and interior, highly modified, totally losing its original appearance. The hermitage was designed for three bells and a dome over the presbytery. The ceiling is covered by a rich wooden coffered ceiling, as well as the Main Altar, where the image of Santa Lucía is located. The flooring and plinth are made with quality materials and the interior is lit by two beautiful wrought iron lamps. The façade is covered by a strong stone plinth, as well as its windows and main door. At the end of the 90s, the "Puerta de Arenas Recreational Area" was built, offering different activities; bird watching, botanical garden, hiking, picnic area and recreation area.
