Archaeological site

Cerrillo, s/n de Vilches. 23220, Vilches

Giribaile is located at the confluence of the Guadalimar and Guadalén rivers, in the municipality of Vilches. The archaeological area occupies a prominent position at the end of a plateau interrupted by a barrier-type fortification that serves as a boundary and, at the same time, as the main access to the Iberian city. It can be considered, with its 18 hectares, one of the largest Iberian towns in the province of Jaén.

At present you can visit the Interpretation Center in Vilches and learn about the historical evolution of this important site.

In the archaeological site, you can visit a prehistoric sanctuary, an Iberian settlement, an early Christian or Visigothic monastery or hermitage and an Almohad castle, all surrounded by beautiful landscapes between olive groves and mountains. Landscape, culture, heritage, history, nature, hiking ... all intermingle in Giribaile, where it is possible to appreciate the mark left by different peoples and cultures throughout the centuries.

Thus, together with the remains of the castle, the traveler will also be able to see the remains that still remain of the great wall that surrounded the Iberian oppidum, an important city that occupied a strategic place on the connecting road between Cástulo and the Levant and that it was abandoned after being razed by the Romans. Similarly, the numerous caves that are distributed along the slopes of the hill, the so-called Cuevas de Espeluca, are also interesting.
