Valdepeñas de Jaén Frailes Sierra Sur

RECOMMENDATIONS

Although there is no technical difficulty, a minimum of physical form is required to overcome some tough slopes. Any time of the year is good, in September you can attend the ritual of the bellowing of the deer. It is not allowed to leave the path through the farm. At km 9.6 you pass very close to some beehives, you have to be careful.

DESCRIPTION

Next to the Valdepeñas de Jaén soccer field, located in the upper part of the town, the dirt track that leads to Frailes starts. As soon as you have started pedaling, you face the first climb of the day that will not give way until after a farmhouse. Shortly after starting the descent, right at the apex of a curve (km. 4.4), you have to leave the lane and take the one that continues straight ahead. Soon the fence that delimits the Solana Los Morales farm appears. The gate remains open during the day and as indicated by the panels, you cannot leave the road during the entire journey. After going up a hill, you leave the hunting ground. The route continues straight ahead at the two junctions and to the left at a fork. Finally it flows into a vast cereal plains known as the Llanos del Ángel. At this point, take the Frailes road to the left, and a kilometer later (km 11.4) opt for the paved lane on the right that climbs in a zigzag. From the hill you descend towards the legendary Hoya de Charilla. The track now surrounds the Sierra del Rompezapatos and adapts to its tangled orography. Then begins a series of climbs -some short but with very steep ramps- that end in false hills, until reaching Charilla. The route enters the town through Prado Street. In the square (km. 22.7) turn left and along Calle de la Fuente you leave it. The lane first descends, then follows a stream and immediately reaches a crossroads (km. 26.1). You have to turn left. After 5 kilometers of constant ups and downs you can see Frailes. Pedal-traversing the difficult terrain of the Sierra Sur means entering a little-known mountain area, away from the great circuits, but of extraordinary beauty and great natural value. Its winding valleys, energetic hills and sheltered holes seduce. Also in this silent mountain range, the solitudes clothe unique legends such as that of La Serena de la Fuente del Sotillo and give life to a popular religiosity halfway between mysticism and magic, that of saints and healers. A magical mountain range in every way.
