In Chiclana, the feast of San Marcos has been celebrated since time immemorial, with records dating back to the time of Philip II, when it was already considered a very old festival stemming from a vow made by the people of Chiclana to the saint who protects livestock farmers and fields, after finding themselves threatened by a locust plague that, as was said at the time, was devouring the wheat fields of the district of Chiclana and neighbouring areas. From this vow and this festival survives, to this day, the custom of preparing and eating the hornazos de San Marcos on that day, 25 April.
