Despeñaperros Natural Park
Outdoor sports at the natural door of Andalusia
Numerous bird species inhabit the Despeñaperros Natural Park: the Spanish imperial eagle, the griffon vulture, serins, rock thrushes, and wheatears. The Valdeazores ravine, with its exceptional botanical richness, is of particular tourist interest. Among the area's cultural attractions is one of the most important Iberian sanctuaries on the peninsula, located at the Collado de los Jardines pass. Human presence in this natural area dates back to the Neolithic period. From this era come the remains found in the Iberian sanctuary of the Cueva de los Muñecos (one of the most remarkable in Spain). The cave paintings of the Cueva de las Vacas del Retamoso caves are also of interest.
Outside the boundaries of the Natural Park and very close to the town of Aldeaquemada, lies La Cascada de La Cimbarra waterfall, a spectacular cascade on the Guarrizas River, declared a Natural Area with an area of 534 hectares. Nearby are the important Levantine and Schematic Rock Art sites of Aldeaquemada, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998: Tabla del Pochico, Poyos de la Cimbarra, Garganta de la Hoz...
