Pilgrimage to the Hermitage of La Carrasca

Description

In the 18th century, at Venta de los Santos, within the municipal district of Chiclana de Segura, there was a hermitage for the worship of the Virgen de Nazaret and the Cristo de la Expiración. At the end of the 18th century, the founding of new settlements under the rule of Charles III attached this Venta to the neighbouring town of Montizón. Tradition holds that, to avoid conflict between the two towns, each image was assigned by lottery, with the Virgin going to Montizón and the Christ to Chiclana de Segura; but it so happened that their platforms became so heavy that they could not be lifted until the images were swapped back. During the transfer of the image of the Virgen de Nazaret, the people of Chiclana rested at the spot known as "La Carrasca" (which came to be called Descansadero de la Carrasca), and decided that, every 15 May, a pilgrimage would be held there in honour of the Virgin.
