Holy Week in Fuensanta de Martos
Description
One of the most important milestones of Fuensanta's culture and tradition is its Holy Week, in which the Live Re-enactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ forms the central element, held on Holy Thursday.
Considered one of the treasures of traditional culture in the province of Jaén, it is held on Holy Thursday at a natural site known as the Calvario, at the foot of which stands one of the town's most important monuments, the Fuente de la Negra. This site becomes wrapped in an awe-inspiring atmosphere, where the words recounting, year after year, what many consider the greatest story ever told resonate in a particularly powerful way. The origins of these Passion re-enactments are lost in the collective memory of the people of Fuensanta, although it was not until 1975 that they were rescued from oblivion and revived with notable success. Today's re-enactment portrays the final hours of Jesus Christ's life, beginning with the Last Supper and ending with the Crucifixion between the thieves Gestas and Dimas, and his death — these final moments being the most dramatically powerful of the whole performance, where the setting, music and lighting help heighten the emotion of this crucial moment.
