Jaén Paraíso Interior Event

Description

This is without doubt one of the most deeply rooted festivals in Baños, held on All Saints' Day, in early November, when men, and also women, form groups or “partías” and leave the village for small farmhouses or huts in the mountains, where they spend several days and nights hunting birds with birdlime (“liria”), sharing bread, wine and jokes.

The origin of this custom is thought to lie in the fact that, on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, the church bells would ring constantly, day and night, causing considerable distress — which the village men would escape by heading somewhere the bells could not be heard, turning the occasion into more of a “wake”, with plentiful food and drink for the living who were present, than a remembrance of those who had already departed this world, whose souls, and the prayers said for them, were left in the hands of the women who had stayed behind in the village.
