The deer rut

Between the end of September and the beginning of October one of the greatest shows of animal nature takes place: the deer's berrhea. This unique phenomenon marks the transition between summer and autumn, and offers the opportunity to observe the behavior of deer in the middle of mating.

The province of Jaén is a privileged stage to listen to the sounds of the male deer during the berreawith those who want to announce both the females and the other males that they are in the area. These sounds usually take place when the dawn breaks or when the sun is about to set. The natural parks of the province are an ideal place to observe also the epic clashes that occur between the male deer to court the females in times of zeal, making sound their elegant cornamentas to impose on others.

Where to observe the deer berrhea in the province of Jaén?

The Jiennense province has various enclaves to enjoy this expected moment, located most of them in the Natural Park Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and the Villas, the PN Sierra de Andújar or PN Despeñadogs. The Active Tourism and Leisure Center El Tranco offers you the opportunity to make a guided route by some of the scenarios chosen by Felix Rodríguez de la Fuente to record scenes of the berrea in the Natural Park of Cazorla, Segura and the Villas. This route allows the sighting of other animals such as the boar, the gamo, the cormoran or the fishing eagle from the Bujaraiza Mirador, as well as a tour to the Island of Cabeza de la Viña(one of the best enclaves to enjoy the berrea in all its splendor) and visit the old village of Bujaraiza.

The Central de Visitantes Llano de las Américas organizes a variety of 4x4 route guided by experts for the observation and listening to the deer's berrea in the Natural Park Despeñacolos, where there will also be known different aspects of the species that are seen: deer, goos, muflones, boar, rapaces...

The company Birds & Lynx Ecotourismdevelop a 4x4 guided tour in the Sierra de Andújar to observe, listen and photograph the deer's berrhea and the groin of the gamo, at dawn or at sunset, a great opportunity to know the habitat of the Iberian deer and the gamo, its ecology and its behavior.
