Martos, Capital of the Calatrava Commandery

Martos offers us a unique enclave and a unique image: the legendary Peña, the house settled on its hillsides, forming a beautiful set of white houses, spilled on successive steps looking for the plain, and all of it wrapped by the wealth and magnitude of the olive tree.

The origins of the city go back to Prehistory. It was the Ibera city of Tucci, and in Roman times the Colonia Augusta Gemella. With the Visigoths it was episcopal headquarters, the Muslims gave it the name of Martos, being at this time an important military fortress. After the Christian conquest it became the capital of the Order of Calatrava in Alto Guadalquivir. His special physical configuration and complex historical legacy give him an appeal and a singularity that have led him to the recognition of the Historical Set as Good of Cultural Interest.
