Carrasqueño de Alcaudete

Description

This is an olive variety native to the province of Jaén, particularly associated with the Alcaudete and Alcalá la Real regions, where its cultivation has had the greatest historical significance, covering an area of 4,125 hectares, representing 0.95% of the olive-growing area in the province of Jaén. It has traditionally also been referred to simply as Carrasqueño. The name refers to the robustness of its leaves, which resemble those of holm oaks and oaks. It is a rustic variety, well adapted to mountainous areas. The tree has high vigour, medium productivity and a strong tendency towards alternate bearing. Its leaves are elliptical-lanceolate and dark green in colour. The fruit is medium-sized, oval and somewhat elongated in shape, ripening relatively late. In the oil, notes of apple, banana and green almond predominate, with moderate bitterness and balanced pungency. It is a variety with its own distinct character, and one of great interest for differentiating the oils of the Sierra Sur of Jaén.
