Pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Victoria
Description
The pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Victoria takes place on the last Sunday of May, when the venerated Image is once again taken up to her hermitage, accompanied by pilgrims dressed in traditional costume. The image of the Virgin is carried on an ox-cart, with pilgrims walking alongside or riding in floats decorated with floral themes and various other decorations.
During the parade of floats, the atmosphere is festive and joyful: songs are sung, cheese and ham are enjoyed, and rebujito is drunk. Once at La Peña, a solemn Mass is held. Once the religious events are over, there are drinks stalls, and the people of Martos scatter to eat at the various spots set up for that purpose around the hermitage. Young people set up their own tents for shade and to stay together, eating and drinking in fellowship. This forms part of the more secular celebration accompanying the pilgrimage.
