Convent of the Inmaculada Concepción Carmelitas descalzas

LUGAR DE INTERÉS

Description

This Carmelite convent was founded in March 1595, its first Prioress being the Reverend Mother Ana de la Encarnación, companion of Santa Teresa de Jesús.In the convent, the lack of ornamentation prevails, in accordance with the austerity that reflects the spirit of the Order, but in the interior rooms there is a valuable permanent exhibition called “Los Tesoros de la Clausura”, which has an important pictorial collection, among which the primitive portrait of San Juan de la Cruz, painted by Fray Juan de las Miserias, stands out. It also has other important and interesting collections of sculptures, reliquaries, ornaments, etc. Today, the Discalced Carmelite Sisters continue to live in the convent, and their baking is famous, among which the exquisite anise donuts sold on the convent's own wheel are worth highlighting.
