Description
Every 25 April, Hinojares celebrates its patron saint festival in honour of San Marcos. To mark the occasion, the saint is carried in procession and the traditional blessed "tortas de San Marcos" are handed out — round sweets with ribbed edges.
The Evangelist saint is carried in procession holding one such cake in his left arm, representing the many that, once the religious ceremony ends, are distributed among locals and visitors alike, as an old, time-honoured act of communal charity, paid for from municipal funds. Until about half a century ago, it was customary for the Patron Saint not to process alone through the streets of Hinojares, but to be accompanied by the image of San Blas.
