LUGAR DE INTERÉS

Description

Between the Plaza Vázquez de Molina, where there are authentic works of the Renaissance such as the Sacra Capilla del Salvador y el Barrio de San Lorenzo, where Antonio Muñoz Molina lived his childhood and youth, is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, also known as the Plaza de los Caídos because of the sculpture it houses. A sculpture that is located in the center of the square and is dedicated to all those who fell in the Spanish Civil War. It was made in 1951 by the master image maker from Cádiz Juan Luis Vasallo. The Ubetan author mentions this square and/or its sculpture several times in his work The Polish Rider, both to evoke his usual itinerary to the San Lorenzo neighborhood, and to remember interesting aspects in the novel. “[…] and it was Don Mercurio who commissioned it to be made […], to an artist who later became very famous […], Eugenio Utrera, I don't know if you got to know him, he also made the monument that is in the Plaza de los Caídos […]” Antonio Muñoz Molina.
