Description
It was declared a National Monument by Decree No. 3,764 of 23 December 1972. The church of St. Peter was built on another temple of small, possibly Gothic dimensions, which was demolished. The parish church began in 1500. The northern facade has flamboyant gothic dyes. At the top are the arms shields that belong to the bishop at the time of Jaén, Don Alonso Suárez of the Fuente del Wilce (1500-1520). The southern façade called the Sol de Mediodía, is of a silver style and is attributed to Diego de Alcaraz. The interior is sober, of harmonious proportions, has three ships and a vault of cassettes on the presbytery. In 1577 Alonso Barba took over the works already started. The building lasted long years, as it was an ambitious work for a people of two thousand. Later, in 1584, Alonso de Vandelvira took over the work being "Arquitecto Mayor" of this Villa. The tower is one of the most beautiful and slender in Spain. Its construction begins over 1619, that is, it is from the 17th century, and it is the work of Aranda and Salazar.
