Festivities of Santa Clara de Asís
Description
The celebrations take place around the days before and after 11 August, the feast day of the Virgin. Sports competitions, musical performances and open-air dances make up the festivities. Santa Clara's intervention during an epidemic was decisive in eradicating the disease. This popular belief instilled in the people of Lahiguera a devotion to this Marian title, and she was named the town's patron saint in 1251. On 9 August, a beer tasting and a tapas competition are held. At 11 pm, the open-air dance begins, accompanied by a live band, with the people of Lahiguera dancing until dawn. On the 10th, numerous activities are held for children, and in the evening the open-air dance starts up again, with dancing accompanied by a live band. On the 11th, the feast day of Santa Clara and a local holiday, Mass is held in honour of the patron saint, and her image is carried in procession through the town's streets. In the evening, a local rociero choir and local musical groups perform, and the festivities close with the Foam Party.
