Far from the tourist bustle and full of meaning, this road invites you to live a paused and authentic experience, walking unique landscapes, charming villages and paths marked by centuries of tradition.

A historic route across the province of Jaén

As it passes through Jaén, this route allows the pilgrim to enter into landscapes full of history, culture and nature. The province has two main accesses that run through the Sierra Sur de Jaén, and both finally join in the municipality of Alcaudete:

  • From the city of Jaén: the route starts from the majestic Cathedral of Jaén, jewel of the Andalusian Renaissance, and advances through the municipalities of Torredelcampo, Jamilena, Martos and Alcaudete, before crossing to Córdoba.

  • From the province of Granada: the road enters Jaén by Alcalá la Real, passing through Castillo de Locubín and Ventes del Carrizal, to reach also Alcaudete, where both tracks are unified.

Summer, heritage and roads between fortresses


Making the Mozarto Road in summer allows you to enjoy the province's historical heritage more calmly. In the South Sierra de Jaén, the landscape is marked by centuries of history: this area was a border between the Christian and Nazari kingdoms and it retains important examples of defensive architecture, such as the imposing Fortaleza de la Mota in Alcalá la Real. Or the Calatravo Castle of Alcaudete, which guarded roads and commercial routes.

If you decide to walk the Mozário Road during the hottest months, here are some recommendations to make the experience comfortable and secure:

  • Start early: walk first thing in the morning to avoid the hottest hours.

  • Hydrate well: it has enough water.

  • Solar protection: use sunscreen, sunglasses, cap and breathable clothes.

  • Do short stages: adjust your rhythm and enjoy the environment without haste.

  • Check the accommodation: many small villages offer hospitality to the pilgrim, but it is appropriate to plan in advance.

  • Enjoy the unravaged road: it is ideal to move without crowds throughout the year, in direct contact with the natural environment and cultural heritage.
