In Lopera we find one of the best examples of castles built by the Military Order of Calatrava in the province of Jaén. Declared an asset of cultural interest in 1991, this fortress preserves its original walled perimeter, although over the years it also served as a residence and even as a winery in the mid-20th century.

Saturdays and Sundays: 11am to 2pm. Groups, arrange a visit.

Thanks to the restoration work carried out, the Castle of Lopera has recovered its original appearance and the logical deterioration caused by the passage of time has been avoided in a fortress that is considered by researchers as one of the jewels of defensive architecture. That is why, when the visitor crosses the main door, located in front of the Town Hall and which gives access to the enclosure, the image they see is very similar to what any neighbor would see back in the 13th century. It is on this date when the Order of Calatrava transformed and carried out the new construction on the basis of an Arab fortification that protected the neighbors.

Located right in the center of the municipality, the castle, with an irregular pentagon floor plan, has two enclosures: an external one made up of wall lines and protected by five towers, and an internal one in which two majestic towers called San Miguel and Santa María respectively, which are joined together by two canvases. The San Miguel tower was used to control access to the fortress. In this tower you can still see the damage caused by a projectile during the Spanish Civil War. Currently, on the ground floor of the tower there is a museum dedicated to the Battle of Lopera. As for the tower of Santa María or the Homage, it had two superimposed rooms. The one below was transformed into a Gothic chapel during the works carried out in the 16th century to convert the castle into a noble residence and, already in the 20th century, it was reformed again in order to condition it as a living room by the owner family .
