The Mountain Villages

SHARES THE SOURCES OF THE SAFE RIVER WITH THE SHEPHERDS

You will find beautiful reservoirs hidden between high mountains and crystalline rivers that have seen the wood of ancient empires descend. You will be able to walk through the most extensive high plateau of Spain, embrace one of the longest living pines and marvel at a population scattered in many villages surrounded by mountains, which are unusual in the south of Spain. The Serranos have known how to adapt to a beautiful and hostile environment, making hospitality another attraction for visitors.

Because the climate and geography of this territory have not prevented human beings from dispersing throughout more than 80 inhabited villages -some of them with two or three people-. Each one with its own lifestyle and its particular uses; a true example of the art of taking advantage of resources without exhausting them.

You are in the land of the Segureño lamb, perhaps the main resource of the area, a breed of sheep different from all the others, which has marked the destiny of this part of the Segura mountains and which will allow you to enjoy one of the best known and most sought-after delicacies in all of Spain - don't leave without trying it.

You will have the opportunity to appreciate important samples of cave painting, present in numerous caves and shelters, witnesses of the wanderings of our species for more than five thousand years.

At the Las Anchuricas reservoir you will discover one of the most spectacular landscapes in the whole Park. An authentic green lake between mountains that reflects the colour of the surrounding forests, where you are sure to be flown over by griffon vultures.

You will certainly not lack for water. Here is the source of La Toba, the source of the Segura river, the source of the Zumeta river, the Juntas de Miller...

And if you are looking to get lost in nature, this is your chance. Thousands of hectares where you have the feeling that the world has stopped, and where birds, deer and mountain goats will be your only companions.
