Martos

Martos is situated in the north of the district of Sierra Sur and is the largest township in the district, both by area and population. The township also includes the villages of Monte Lope Álvarez, Las Casillas, La Carrasca and Villarbajo.

The municipal area is predominantly made up of olive groves, which disappear over the horizon. Due to the large quantity and quality of the olive oil that is produced here, it is known as the "Cuna del olivar" (Home of the Olive). Around this has developed a significant olive industry is one of the main engines for wealth and employment in the town and the district, along with the other factories and industries that support it.

The town also boasts an impressive historical heritage, with highlights including the Antigua Cárcel (Old Prison) y Cabildo (Town Hall), the Castles of la Peña and la Villa, the Roman Bridge, the city walls, the Castle of la Encomienda and the fountain of Fuente Nueva. The town also boasts important religious architecture, including the Real Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Marta (Royal Parochial Church of Saint Martha), Santuario de María Santísima de la Villa (Sanctuary of the Most Blessed Saint Mary of Villa), Monasterio de la Santísima Trinidad (Monastery of the Holy Trinity), the Ermita de San Bartolomé (Chapel of Saint Batholomew), the Parroquia de San Amador y Santa Ana (the Parochial Church of Saint Amador and Saint Anna).
