Sabiote

Sabiote is a town in the centre of the province of Jaén, situated in the district of La Loma y Las Villas. It sits in the heights of an interfluve, bordered the Guadalimar river to the north and the Guadalquivir river to the south. It's the third-highest peak of the so-called "Renaissance triangle of La Loma", with arguably the best display of Renaissance architecture along with Úbeda and Baeza.

It also forms part of the "Ruta del Renacimiento Andrés de Vandelvira" (Andrés de Vandelvira Renaissance Route), along with Úbeda, Baeza, Canena and Villacarrillo, a collection of sites and monuments in the district. It’s a delight to walk through Sabiote, with its well-preserved houses, cobbled streets and emblazoned townhouses.

The local economy revolves almost exclusively around olives, as in most of the rest of the district. There are also local artisan workshops producing wool rugs, articles made from esparto grass and palm and leather horse tack.

Efforts are being made to boost the tourism to its historic attractions.

The highlight of the town’s architectural heritage is, without a doubt, the castle, which has its origins in an ancient Hispano-Muslim citadel that was later transformed into a Renaissance palace by Don Francisco de los Cobos.

Other highlights include the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro (Parochial Church of Saint Peter), with a mix of Gothic, Plateresque and Renaissance styles, the Ermita de San Ginés de la Jara (Chapel of Saint Ginés of la Jara), dating from the 18th century, and the renaissance-style Monastery of Carmelitas Descalzas.
