Mengíbar is situated north of the city of Jaén, between the Guadalquivir and Guadalbullón river. The surrounding land is covered with olive trees, cereals and fruit. Being located alongside the E-902 motorway or the A-44 (Bailén-Motril) has helped the town to maintain an economic balance between agriculture, industry and services. Upon arriving at Mengíbar, the Guadalquivir river slows down and begins a calm middle course, allowing greater use of its water. It is believed that the original site of the famous Roman city of Iliturgis was near here, on what is today the rich archaeological site of Cerro Maquiz.

The town itself sits on a smooth hill of fertile land with both dry and irrigated fields. It has preserved a number of important buildings and monuments, such as the renaissance church dedicated the San Pedro Apóstol (Saint Peter the Apostle), a beautiful Mora tower, the town hall and the Palacio de los Conde de Garcíez (Palace of the Count of Garcíez). The centre of Mengíbar, with its irregular layout and Arabic influences, has expanded towards the east, west and north, resulting in a rectangular network of wide streets, with large blocks close to the old centre and small blocks on the outskirts.
