Pozo Alcón

Pozo Alcón is located in the south of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, caught between the two landscapes of green mountains and dry lowlands that join with Granada. The local economy revolves around agriculture, with the main crops being olives, almonds and arable crops. Livestock farming is also important here, particularly sheep (Segureño sheep) and poultry. The poor transport links with Jaén have meant that the town has closer ties to Baza in Granada than to other towns in the province.

Up until the 18th century, the village was part of the township of Quesada, and it boasts some valuable and well-preserved traditional architecture. It is the only village in the natural park whose population has not shrunk since the park was created. The village was preserved old monuments such as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation) and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square). The houses show deep respect for traditional architecture, particularly in the higher neighbourhoods which surround the church.

Tourism is becoming a more important sector for the future in the area known as "Sierra del Pozo", where there are exceptional landscapes and numerous sites of great environmental value. Close to the village is the beautiful location of the Bolera Reservoir.
