La Puerta de Segura

La Puerta de Segura is a township in the district of Sierra de Segura, in the northeast of the province of Jaén. Its name comes from its location as the natural entrance to the Sierra de Segura and one of the main points of access to the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, within which a large part of its municipal area is included. It boasts a highly varied landscape of olive fields and sierra.

The township also includes the villages of Los Pascuales, Las Graceas, Bonache, Los Llanos and Los Yegüerizos.

The local economy is largely based on agriculture, with olives being the dominant crop. Tourism and the hospitality sector are also important for the town, and the area is popular for big-game hunting, small-game hunting and fishing.

The town centre of the La Puerta de Segura is divided in two by the Guadalimar river, and the town’s historic heritage includes the Iglesia de San Mateo (Church of Saint Matthew), the theatre, the bridge over the Guadalimar river, the Castle of Bujalamé and the Casa Tercia.
