Hinojares

Hinojares is a small village in the southeast of the province of Jaén, in the district of Alto Guadalquivir. It is located south of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, and a large part of the municipal area belongs to the park. It also borders the townships of Quesada, Pozo Alcón and Huesa.

Hinojares is reached along the A-315 road from Torreperogil to Baza, turning off between Huesa and Pozo Alcón along the JA-8200.

The township includes the village of Cuenca, where the Turrilla river starts. It is currently one of the smallest townships in Jaén, with barely four hundred inhabitants, a quarter of whom are foreigners who have bought derelict houses, renovated them and become local residents.

Hinojares preserves all the charm of the traditional villages, with its well-kept white façades, narrow streets and flowery balconies. It is divided into three neighbourhoods:

  • Barrio Bajo. This is the oldest neighbourhood and contains the area’s most iconic buildings.
  • Barrio Alto, which is home to the oldest cave houses in Hinojares.

The local economy depends on agriculture, hunting and pastoral activities.
The composites that form its many slopes, gullies and ravines, stain the desert horizon with a fascinating mosaic of colours.

The Turrillas river  is what provides the area with its life, geography and history. Its course runs between two hamlets: Cuenca, where it starts, and Arroyomolinos (currently uninhabited), where it converges with the Ceal river.

The township is home to the Iberian site of Castellones de Ceal, an enclave which experienced periods of great riches and prosperity in the 4th century BC. A key part of the township’s architectural heritage is the Iglesia Parroquial church of San Marcos (Parochial Church of Saint Mark), built in the 17th century.
