Carboneros is a small township in the north of the province, tucked away in the southern face of Sierra Morena, alongside the Madrid-Sevilla motorway.

The municipal area is predominanty pasture land where there are some livestock farms and small game reserves. The local economy is mainly based on olives. The township can be divided into three main areas: the north, with steep slopes varying between 700 and 1300 m altitude; the south, close to Vilches, Linares and Baños de la Encina, which has a smooth landscape with more gentle slopes owing to the Guadiel and Guadalén rivers; and a central area varying in altitude from 6 to 500 metres.
