Canena

Canena is a small township in the province of Jaén, in the north of the district known as La Loma

Almost the entire municipal area is dedicated to olive farming. Canena the total area of the township is just 14 km2, which is very small when compared with the surrounding towns of Ibros, Rus, Baeza or Úbeda.

The town boasts an impressive renaissance palace/castle commissioned by Don Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to King Carlos I.

The parochial church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Our Lady of the Conception) was built in a renaissance style in the first half of the 16th century.

A special mention should be given to the thermal baths which date from Roman times and were officially declared a spa in 1853. The spa’s medicinal-mineral waters were declared a public asset in 1948 and it is currently the only working spa in the province of Jaén.
