Marmolejo

Marmolejo is a town in the west of Jaén in the district of Campiña, bordering the province of Córdoba.

The hilly northern half of the municipal area is part of the Sierra Morena, and part of this region is included in the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park.

The southern half is mainly made up of farmland, where olives are the predominant crop, although the plains of the Guadalquivir are important for irrigated crops such as corn, cotton, alfalfa and a wide range of vegetable produce.

The local economy is based on agriculture, livestock farming, forestry and hunting. The hospitality sector is also important due to the number of travellers moving along the nearby A-4 motorway.

The town’s most important festival is the procession of the Virgen de la Cabeza (Virgen of Cabeza) which is celebrated on the last Sunday of April.

Another highlight is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz (Church of Our Lady of the Peace), built in the 14th century and renovated in the 18th century.

The town’s spa is also famous for its medicinal-mineral properties.
