La Guardia de Jaén

A small town in the west of the district of Sierra Mágina, just a few kilometres from the city of Jaén. The main town, situated on the east side of the Cerro de San Cristóbal, looking at the Guadalbullón river, preserves its local character, with its white houses and steep, narrow streets.

Amongst La Guardia’s most interesting natural sites stand out the Cerro de San Cristóbal, whose peak is covered with pines, and the meadows of the Guadalbullón river and its abundant riverside vegetation.

La Guardia offers many possibilities for excursions on foot, on horseback or by bicycle, such as the route to the Cañada del Santo or along the banks of the Guadalbullón river. Archaeological highlights in the area include the settlements of Guadaola (from the Emiral period), the Roman villa of Yuca and the various Iberian-Roman necropolises of Las Eras de San Sebastián and Barranquillo.

The castle, of Arabic origin, was remodelled as a palace-citadel by the Messia during the 14th and 15th centuries and is the architectural jewel of the town, along with the Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción (Parochial Church of the Assumption), a 16th-century building which was originally a Dominican convent.
