Appellation of origin

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is an official mark recognized at European level through Community Regulation CE 2081/92, granted to recognize agri-food products of differential quality, due to their history and their natural environment.

The body in charge of controlling the Denomination of Origin is the Regulatory Council, dependent on the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de Andalucía. Olive groves, oil mills and bottling plants are registered within the Regulatory Council. The oils covered by the Denomination of Origin are subjected to a certification process that begins with monitoring from the olive grove to the product packed in the bottle. In the province of Jaén there are currently three Denominations of Origin of extra virgin olive oil.
