Bird Watching

Jaén's unique environmental and botanical variety and its abundant wetlands combine to offer bird lovers one of the best habitats to observe birdlife at its best. The Natural Parks, water-dams and river courses will permit visitors to watch a great variety of bird species living in those habitats. The province of Jaén is the ideal setting for ornithological tourism, an activity still in its infancy in Jaén what can be practised in the following habitats.

Sierra Sur y Campiña de Jaén

The Sierra Sur is an extensive region located at the southern end of Jaén. Ropera Reservoir

Sierra de Andújar

In the municipality of Jódar, next to the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, we find an important nesting population of Common Swamphen. Sierra Morena, Aldeaquemada-Dañador

 

At the eastern end of Sierra Morena, straddling the North and Condado regions, we find an important nesting population of the Iberian Imperial Eagle, and other birds of prey such as the Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Royal Eagle, Partridge Eagle and Eagle Owl. It also breeds the Black Stork. Abundance of Black Tail, White Tail, Tomillera Warbler and Carrasqueña Warbler.

Laguna del Chinche

Esta reserva natural es una de las pocas lagunas que se encuentran en la provincia de Jaén. Se trata de una zona húmeda de origen endorreico, con 5 hectáreas de extensión. Tiene un carácter temporal, presentando agua únicamente en períodos bastante lluviosos, ya que se alimenta por escorrentía superficial y las lluvias que caen directamente sobre la misma.

Es un espacio de relativa importancia para la invernada de algunas aves y un lugar de paso en las rutas migratorias de otras. Se pueden encontrar especies como el porrón común, pato cuchara, ánade real, o pato colorado, entre otras. Por tanto, la mejor época para visitar la laguna es en invierno.

Existe poca vegetación palustre en la zona; en la orilla de la laguna aparecen escasos tarajes y juncos. Por el contrario, abunda el uso agrícola del terreno, fundamentalmente olivar que ocupa las laderas de la laguna, lo que favorece la erosión en la cuenca y la colmatación de la cubeta.
